Privacy Policy

WAYR (“we”, “our”, “us”) is a social reading app published by Better Reading Pty Ltd, an Australian company. This policy explains what personal information we collect when you use WAYR, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the rights you have over it.

We handle your information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).

1. What we collect

• Account information — email address, password (hashed by Supabase Auth, never stored in plaintext), display name, username, and an optional avatar image you upload.
• Profile information — bio, location (Australian state/territory), favourite genres, and a yearly reading goal — anything you choose to add to your profile.
• Reading activity — books on your shelves, dates you started or finished a book, current page progress, ratings, and written reviews.
• Device information — push notification tokens (if you opt in), the app version, and basic operating-system version for compatibility checks.

2. Why we collect it

• To run the app — sign you in, sync your library, show you your reading stats.
• To power the social experience — public profiles, reviews, and discovery (only if you choose to make this content public; see Privacy Settings in-app).
• To deliver features you enable — for example push notifications you've opted into, or genre-based recommendations.
• To diagnose problems and improve the app.

We do not sell your information to advertisers or third-party data brokers.

3. Third-party services

WAYR depends on a small number of trusted services:

• Supabase (hosted in the Sydney AWS region) for authentication, database storage, and avatar storage. Supabase processes your data under their privacy policy.
• Firebase Cloud Messaging (Google) for push notifications, when enabled.
• Open Library, Google Books, and TitlePage for book metadata. We send book identifiers (ISBN, title) to these services when you search; we do not send personal information.
• Apple App Store and Google Play distribute the app and may collect their own diagnostic information per their policies.

4. How long we keep it

We keep your information for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account (Settings → Delete Account), we permanently remove your profile, shelves, ratings, reviews, and reading activity immediately. Backup copies are purged on our standard backup rotation (within 30 days). Aggregated and de-identified statistics (e.g. total app users, books finished platform-wide) may be retained without reference to you, and we may keep limited records where retention is required by Australian law or to resolve a dispute.

5. Your rights

You can, at any time:

• Access the information on your profile by signing in.
• Correct it via Settings → Edit Profile.
• Adjust visibility via Settings → Privacy Settings (public/private profile, show or hide shelves, ratings, reviews, and reading activity to other users).
• Delete your account and all associated data via Settings → Delete Account.
• Lodge a complaint with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner if you believe we have mishandled your information.

6. Children

WAYR is not directed at children under 13. If you become aware that a child has created an account, please contact us so we can remove it.

7. Changes to this policy

If we make material changes we will notify you in-app before the changes take effect.
